The Martian Analysis

What I really enjoyed about The Martian is the style of narration from the perspective of the main character of the story, I can really get engaged into my reading when the character is having a conversation with the reader. I really enjoyed this reading because of how easy it is for me to latch onto the conversation. "If the Oxygenator breaks down, I’ll suffocate. If the Water Reclaimer breaks down, I’ll die of thirst. If the Hab breaches, I’ll just kind of explode. If none of those things happen, I’ll eventually run out of food and starve to death. So yeah. I’m fucked." The casual way the story starts is super great and funny. I love a story with a character who is a bit cynical yet slightly optimistic because they except their fate so they are going to make the best of their situation and be as sarcastic as possible. This story really pulls me in because I'm used to seeing very complex science fiction situations and I just lose interest from all of the complexity withi

Anansi Boys

I was very excited to read something based on mythology. However, I did not flow into reading this book as well as I would've liked to. The concept of having someone trying to take your place is interesting, but not interesting enough to really capture my attention. Although, it was interesting to see something written about a trickster god and other gods based on animals. I am really used to reading about Greek myth. There are weird moments that I was not expecting, like the whole birds flying out of the mouth deal. Which in my mind I can picture a really cool scene unfolding but I still just did not take enough interest as I thought I would.

The Cursed Child Analysis

The Cursed Child was a good read. However, there are some points of the plot that are just less believable than others. Which ultimately leads it to be a sort of cheesy story. What I did enjoy was the union of Scorpius Malfoy's and Albus Potter's friendship. They are an interesting pair and I loved the character of Scorpius Malfoy. You can really see the difference between his nature and his father's nature when he was his age. This tells us at Draco Malfoy really reformed his personality and was a good role model towards his son. Although his father still maintains some of his characteristics he is still a better person. Then there is the villain. The villain is a poorly thought up character in my opinion. Definitely, a creative back story, being the daughter of Voldemort. However, this character sort of breaks rules set by the other book. I feel it would have been more thoughtful to have this rumor of a love child doing this wrongdoing but then it ends up being just a c

Game of Thrones - Analysis

Game of Thrones is a great book series and show. What I really enjoyed about the story is the constant changing of character perspective. You get to see all parts of the world through all these different character's eyes. I also really like all of the separate families and their sigils and how each family kind of has a different set of morals than the other. It is reminiscent of Hogwarts Houses from Harry Potter. For example, the Lannisters are sort of known as a family that does not show loyalty to others unless it is strategic enough for them to do so. Hence, they had backed up the Baratheon's at the end of the rebellion to have some sort of say in the King's power. Another really cool thing is religion. The inspiration of the old gods and new gods are taken from Greek mythology. This idea of the new gods overtaking the old is a concept borrowed from the story of how Zeus and the gods and goddesses of Olympus fought the Titans and put them in Tartarus. So that they may

The Corn and the Spring Queen - Witches Analysis

What I enjoy most about witches is when they bring pagan rituals into the story. The title screams pagan. Some rituals like this can be twisted because they benign but then they end up being terrifyingly brutal. For example, MidSommar is sort of an example of that. Then there is also Sabrina, they have some weird traditions that they keep in touch with that seems less satanist and more pagan (EX. moon bathing under the Hare moon.). Then there is also this extreme nod towards Greek mythology within this book. As a huge fan of greek mythology myself, I found this to be quite entertaining. However, Greek blood is not helpful towards being a witch which is weird because Circe is one of the first witches and she comes from Greek myth. She is a daughter of Helios who is a Titan so her being a witch is of great controversy among the gods and goddesses. Otherwise great a read.

The New Weird - Horns Analysis

“But when he was swaying above the toilet, he glanced at himself in the mirror over the sink and saw he had grown horns while he slept. He lurched in surprise, and for the second time in twelve hours he pissed on his feet.” This book is interesting because it takes a modern approach to horror. The drunken character that has suffered past traumas is not exactly a new way of writing a character within a horror novel. Although the way the author cuts to the action within the second paragraph on the first page of this novel is a new way of bringing the audience into the story. Yes, usually there is always a hook at the beginning of a story however this hook is just “he had grown horns” without any intense suspense that had led up to this. There was no explanation of his character besides he is a drunk who pisses himself. There is no other indication of how he got into this predicament besides that. I feel as if this character who shares good and bad values all at the same time is a ne
